In The Tree, eventually Father heads in to see the ancient android which speaks old Mithraic after Campion touches its hand. It turns out this is the light that Campion saw, and it wasn’t Sol after all. However, Mother figures out where Campion is and catches them both with the android. Campion reveals he’s called this android ‘Grandmother’ because it’s very old. Mother believes she’s dangerous and turns into her Necromancer form, intending to stop the creature in case it attacks them. Mother is distrusting but when the android passes out,
Father reveals how he “grew” this android. He also repeats the ancient mithraic tongue the creature uttered, which Mother is able to translate: it asked Father “why aren’t you wearing your veil?”
Mother and Father continue to disagree over whether this creature is harmful, as they run more tests together. It would appear that instead of a weapon system, the ancient android has something else comprising the majority of its anatomy. Mother is concerned and decides to keep the children away from her until they can determine exactly what she is.
In Feeding, Mother heads in to see the ancient android, who’s hooked up to numerous tubes. Grandmother reveals that she was built by ancient humans called Technocrats who fought against "the believers" and is called a Shepherd: an android created by the Technocrafts to fight against the Believers in the war. She assures Mother that she is benign, stating that "ensuring the everlasting life of human beings is my priority". The Shepherd theorizes that she could remove her veil and place it on Mother, potentially blocking her caregiving protocols, which would help Mother deal with the serpentine creature.
In Happiness, Mother brings Marcus to see Grandmother, and in their conversation, they chatter about “The Entity”. Grandmother makes an offhand comment to Marcus about how his damaged mind makes him vulnerable to the Entity’s signal. Father isn’t thrilled about Marcus’s presence and even less keen on the idea of Mother using Grandmother’s veil to kill No. 7, but since Grandmother has assured Mother that it won’t cloud her mission objectives or confuse her loyalties to Father and their human children, Mother assures Father that everything will be fine.
