Earth was the birthplace and original homeworld of humanity.
Overview[]
The onset of the Religious War between the Mithraic religion and the Atheists in the 22nd century caused irreparable damage to Earth's ecosystem, to the point where oxygen levels across large swathes of the surface declined below what was necessary to sustain living humans. As the war continued, humans were forced to take refuge in "green zones" that still had sufficient breathable air. By the end of the war in 2145, the Mithraic believers defeated the Atheists, but Earth had entered a terminal decline and would soon no longer support humans.[1][2]
To ensure humanity would live on, the Mithraic Church built the Ark of Heaven to transport 1,000 clergy and genetically-selected believers to Kepler-22b, where they would build a new Mithraic civilization completely free of war. The Ark departed from the ruins of Boston, Massachusetts in 2145. Unknown to the Mithraic, the Atheist hacker Campion Sturges built his own ship for a similar purpose. Campion's small ship carried only two androids and multiple human embryos, and was able to travel faster and arrive at Kepler-22b years ahead of the Ark.
