Campion's ship was a small starship built by the Atheist hacker Campion Sturges. Unlike the Ark of Heaven built by the Mithraic and the Atheist ship, this ship had a capacity for two android passengers and at least 12 human embryos stored in special containers, allowing it to travel at a far greater speed from Earth to Kepler-22b. The ship was integral to Sturges's plan to ensure the survival of humanity beyond the dying Earth and create a new Atheist civilization.
When the ship landed on Kepler-22b in 2147, 12 years before the Ark of Heaven, it came to rest precariously on the cusp of one of the planet's many pits. As Mother and Father disembarked, the ship lost its balance and fell into the pit, where it became wedged on a stone outcrop. The ship remained there for at least a decade, until Campion, the namesake of Sturges and the last of the six humans raised by Mother and Father, rapelled down to it and tried to use its communication system to contact the Ark. In the process, he accidentally initiated the ship's engines. This caused the ship to tumble deeper into the pit, where it then smashed into the pit's wall and exploded.[1]
Later, Paul found a series of cave paintings that depicted a ship carrying two human-like figures that strongly resembled Campion's ship. This implied that the arrival of Campion's ship and the two androids had somehow been foreseen by the native humanoids of Kepler-22b.[2]
